Scripture: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
This week I am traveling to Boise, Idaho for work. As I prepared for the trip, several people asked if I was traveling alone. The answer is yes, and no.
Yes, I will board the plane by myself.. But I will not be alone.
I’ve learned that there is a difference between solitude and loneliness. Loneliness is the feeling that no one is there for us. Solitude is the opportunity to enjoy a quiet moment apart from the demands and distractions of life. Some people dread being by themselves. I am not one of them.
Throughout Scripture, God often met His people when they were by themselves. Moses encountered God in the wilderness. Elijah heard God’s gentle whisper when he was alone on the mountain. Jesus frequently withdrew from the crowds to pray and spend time with His Father.
Perhaps one reason God meets us in those moments is because we finally become still enough to listen.
Travel has a way of creating those opportunities. Sitting in an airport, looking out the window of an airplane, or walking through an unfamiliar city can remind us that God is larger than our routines and present wherever we go. We discover that His presence is not confined to our homes, our churches, or the places where we feel comfortable.
The promise God gave Joshua still applies today: “The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Not just in the familiar places. Not just when we are surrounded by people. But, wherever we go.
Shine, Shine, Shine!
