I keep coming back to the picture of a river. God pours His goodness into our lives, and then He invites us to let it flow into the lives of others. A reservoir holds water in one place. A river carries it along, bringing life wherever it goes. To me, that is such a beautiful picture of overflow .
Jesus said, “Whoever believes in me… rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:38 NIV). I love that He said rivers. His Spirit is at work within us, and what He gives us is meant to reach beyond us. A river doesn’t have to strain to flow. It simply moves, bringing water to places that need it.
I wonder what that might look like in our everyday lives. Maybe our family experiences a little more patience because we’ve spent time with Jesus. Maybe someone at work feels seen because we stopped to listen. Even a quick conversation with a cashier, a neighbor, or a stranger can be a chance to share a little kindness. We may never know how much that moment meant to them.
I’ll admit, there are times when I’m tempted to hold back. I wonder whether I have enough time, energy, or resources to give. Sometimes I’m simply comfortable and don’t notice a need right in front of me. That’s when I need God to remind me how much grace He has shown me. I can trust Him to keep caring for me as I care for others.
Jesus put it so simply: “Freely you have received; freely give” (Matthew 10:8 NIV). Everything I have received from Him, from the gift of salvation to the help I needed to get through today, is grace. And that grace can flow into the way I treat someone else. It can look like forgiveness when I’d rather hold on to a hurt. It can sound like encouragement when someone is ready to give up. It can be a meal, a prayer, or an act of generosity offered at just the right time.
The Jordan River gives me one more picture to hold on to. It flows into the Sea of Galilee and continues on toward the Dead Sea. The Sea of Galilee is full of life, while the Dead Sea has no outlet and is known for its salt. I think about that when I’m tempted to keep God’s gifts to myself. I want to receive His goodness with gratitude and let it keep moving through my life.
Perhaps you feel as though you don’t have much to give right now. I understand that feeling. You don’t have to pour from an empty heart. Come to Jesus and let Him care for you. Ask Him to fill you with what you need, and then ask Him to show you one person you can love today. One small act may carry His grace farther than you can see.
That’s my prayer for us: Lord, help us receive Your love freely and share it freely. Let Your kindness, forgiveness, generosity, and hope overflow through us. Make us rivers that carry Your love into the places You’ve put us.
Be a river! Be a light!
Overflow and Shine, Shine, Shine!
