Our Humanity Part 2
A few weeks ago I wrote about a sermon Carl shared regarding Peter’s betrayal. He pointed out that Peter, in as much as he loved Jesus, was able to betray Him because of his humanity. Sunday, Ron continued this discussion by preaching on Matthew 26:36-46. He went a step further saying that when Jesus took three of His disciples to Gethsamane to pray with him, JESUS showed His humanity by being frustrated that they slept and did not pray. He told them, “My soul is deeply grieved, almost to the point of death.” The Son of God was afraid. He even asked God to “…let this cup pass from me.” But yet they didn’t pray with Him. They fell asleep. They didn’t do it once, they did it three times. Jesus’ frustration was evident when he asked, “Could you not watch with me for one hour?”
The past two mornings, (I am writing this Tuesday afternoon) the words “Could you not watch with me one hour” have haunted me. But it’s been a good haunting. I am a planner. I have lists and I want to get things done on my list. I have actually created my own weekly calendar pages. I have a work list and a personal list. That being said, I have started working on my lists and heard a little voice say, “Can you not give me 15 minutes to do your devotions?” I wonder if Jesus’ humanity still creeps in when we are terse with someone, when we gossip, or when we ignore the needs of others. After ALL he has done for us, doesn’t He deserve our time, our service and our praise?
The next time you are too busy for Him, remember His words. “Could you not watch with me one hour?” Your priorities just might change!
Have a fabulous rest of the week.
