Your True North
In my reading on Leadership, I have come across the term, “Finding your True North” a few times. I was curious as to what that means, so I looked it up. The definition I found was:
True North is your orienting point – your fixed point in a spinning world – that helps you stay on track as a leader. It is derived from your most deeply held beliefs, values, and the principles you lead by. It is your internal compass, unique to you, representing who you are at your deepest level.
Reading this made me stop and think about my “orienting point.” Isaiah 26:3 came to mind. “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” My faith, my relationship with the Lord is what keeps me able to weather the storms of today. It provides the internal compass which keeps me moving in the right direction.
I have to be honest with you, my compass has been moving all over the place these last four months. The virus, my dad’s challenges, moving, and now our possible exposure to COVID 19 has somehow pulled me away from my “True North.” I know exactly why. My thoughts have been more centered on me than on my Savior. I can feel the difference when I don’t “keep my thoughts fixed on Him.” It seems as though the more I try to take control of my life, the more it spins out of control.
Thank goodness we having a loving Father who gently pulls us back, and loves us just the same. He knows our tendencies. He knows our weaknesses. He simply KNOWS.
As always, a hymn comes to mind that helps when I am discouraged and need to find my direction again.
Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
Oh soul are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There’s light for a look at the Savior And life more abundant and free
Turn your eyes upon Jesus Look full in His wonderful face And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace
You can hear the chorus.
Do you know your “True North?”
