Covenant Update

Dear Covenant Family:

We had a great Memorial Day service yesterday at Covenant with 32 folks in attendance.  We had minimal announcements this Sunday but you should read the poem Tina included in the attached bulletin titled Freedom Isn’t Free.  We also did the Pledge of Allegiance during the service and closed the service signing God Bless America.

Also, if anyone would like to stay in touch with Teresa Robbins now that she has moved to Lake Butler to live with her daughter, her address is:

Her new phone number is 386-496-8322

I am sure she would love to continue hearing from her Covenant family.

Pastor Don’s sermon began with the history of Memorial Day and how it was originally named Decoration Sunday.  The name was later changed to Memorial Day but still celebrated on a Sunday until Congress made it a federal holiday in 1971 to be celebrated on the last Monday in May.  The scripture that Pastor Don used in his sermon was from 1 Corinthians 11:17-22, where Paul was critical of the Corinthian Church for its conduct at the Lord’s Supper.  Don spoke about how our country has become much like the Corinthians where we have forgotten what God has done for us in making our country so great.  We have forgotten that we are under God and that we can only defeat evil by remembering Jesus and the ultimate price He paid to save us.

Pastor Don then completed his sermon by referencing 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 in which Paul led the Lord’s Supper for the Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 – For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

Don pointed out the focus on the words Paul spoke (highlighted above) reminding the Corinthians that we take Communion in remembrance of the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for us, and we cannot forget this if we expect to remain close to Him.  We then concluded our service by sharing in Communion.

I wish you all a very blessed Memorial Day, please pray for all those people that have given their lives for our country so we could all live in freedom for so many years!  Please also pray for our country and world that we can again find God and make Him the center of our lives going forward!
