This is usually the most joyful and peaceful time of the year when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is so great to gather with our families and loved ones to celebrate such an amazing event on our Christian calendar. However, this year the world seems to be in a different place than previous years. There is the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, that is now almost two years old. However, there is now also a war between Israel and Hamas. That war has spilled over into our country and other countries as well with actions being taken that until recently we would not have believed would ever happen in our country. We see demonstrations occurring in the streets and cities of the US that exhibit hate and violence and call for the genocide of the Jewish race. How are we to respond to what is going on around us and make a difference in the world today?
I thought Pastor Don’s sermon last Sunday was excellent, sharing scripture that leads to peace and kindness in our hearts.
Luke 2:14 – “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among people with whom He is pleased.” and
John 14:27 – Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.
Don’s sermon made me continue to think this week of how to find peace in the middle of today’s very troubled world. At Covenant Church, I have learned from Tina and the Sounds of Hope choir that such spirit is often found through music. So I would like to share two songs with you today that I hope and pray will help you get in the real flow of the true Christmas spirit this year.
The first song is a favorite of Joe Morgan, and it has been our closing song each year when we had annual Christmas dinners at church. The song is titled Let There Be Peace on Earth, and it is performed by The St. Louis Children’s Choirs
The first sentence of the song is “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me”. This sentence seems to sum up the view we all need to especially have this Christmas season.
Then, you also know I am a huge fan of Alan Jackson. He also has a wonderful song titled Let It Be Christmas and includes many lyrics that will warm your heart for Christmas. The song can be found:
Please listen carefully to the lyrics from both these songs. I hope and pray that both songs will help you overcome any anxiety you may be having this Christmas season, and help you to get into the true Christmas spirit. Always remember that we can overcome all obstacles in our way if we retain the fruit of the Spirit in our lives and hearts always, in spite of our current surroundings.
Galatians 5:22-23 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
I wish each of you a most joyful and peaceful Christmas season with your family and loved ones!
