A few weeks ago, I wrote two consecutive weeks about the phenomenon of Godliness sweeping the country in athletics and the Asbury revival (later continued in the “Rupp Revival”). This past week I have had an additional similar situation. One of Cindy’s girlfriends told her about a movie that they needed to go see named Jesus Revolution. Cindy told me about this plan, so I investigated the movie and I decided I needed to go as well. So last Thursday, Cindy, 3 of her girlfriends, and I went to the movies together.
The film tells the true story of a hippie-led revival in the 1960s/70s that sparked countless ministries. The movie focuses on the stories of three real life men: Chuck Smith, Lonnie Frisbee and Greg Laurie. “The numbers are incredible, especially coming out of a pandemic,” producer Kevin Downes told Christian Headlines, adding that the faith audience has made a statement by coming out “in droves.” “They’re not going away,” Downes said of faith-focused moviegoers.
The culture was ready for Jesus Revolution, Downes said. Its release followed a wave of revivals/outpourings at Asbury University and other schools. Weeks earlier, the sports world embraced prayer after the collapse of Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin. The film’s Feb. 24 release date was announced last year – long before those recent events.
“God’s timing is perfect,” Downes told Christian Headlines. “We’re seeing this play out. … So many people are coming to Christ, and they’re being introduced for the first time to a God who loves them so much. … We’re just really thankful. We’re overjoyed.”
My understanding is that some revivals have broken out in movie theaters at the end of the movie. The movie has already grossed over $40 million, more than twice what was projected. It is available in Gainesville and I highly recommend it. Understand there is a lot of imperfection in the lives of the stars of this movie. I don’t want to give away any of the movie, but each of the stars spends their life following Jesus in their own way and living their lives for Him.
I highly recommend viewing the short trailer for this move, it can be accessed here:
An interview with one of the real-life stars of the movie, Greg Laurie, can be seen here. Greg makes a great point by relating that time in the 1970s to today’s world.

Another interview with one of the movie stars is also available here, just for more perspective:
This movie was jointly produced by Lionsgate, who signed a deal in 2018 with Christian movie producers at Kingdom Story. To see more of their movies, I recommend to Google Lionsgate Christian movies.
